Volvo Fuel Pumps

Currently I seem to be spending a lot of time fiddling round with fuel pumps. 144, 164 and Daimler.

I was doing an oil change on Esperances’ 550000km I think. Well when I came to start her after - no go - no fuel in the filter. Split the lime and turned her over - no fuel.

Luckily I had a “gross” sorry Goss box type pump for another project handy. All my replacement mechanical stuff was in Tasmania. Sitting nicely on a shelf - 2 - 3 spares.

Consulted with Col and Ian re the mounting.. Yup up the back near the tank is best but lets try up the front.

Tried no go. just a small splutter of fuel. The goss pump is a “pusher” not a puller like the mechanical or the SU type so it needs to be near the tank and preferably at a level where it self primes.

The 144 has 3 sections of rubber pipe in the fuel system one at the tank, one in the centre of the car and the rest in the engine bay. The engine bay and tank hoses were severely  cracked - this may have been the problem. the cracks may have let air in under vacuum. I replaced all the rubber hose for good luck and placed the Goss pump infant of the fuel tank un the upper reaches of the wheel well where the fuel injection would be if this was an injected car. The area is still exposed so I may make a shroud or change it to a NZ Fuelflow pump (see www.fuelflow.co.nz) as they look more robust. T threaded a electric feed from the +ive on the coil to power the system.

The system works well car has much more go and starts much easier in the cold of winter.

The 164 pump - the original died - replacements cost more than the car so… a VN Comodore pump from the refined supplier -Super Cheep. - problem fixed.

The Daimler SU died due to storage without care for 15 years. So it looks like being replaced by a FuelFlow 15LM12. will update as that happens.

145s ramblings

As I wait for a time to do the trip back south with the 145s Ive been fiddling and fixing. First the manifold as in the previous post. Sti...
